Semantic Assistants at IBM CASCON 2011

Last week I presented our Semantic Assistants Eclipse plug-in at the IBM Conference of Advances studies in Markham, Ontario. CASCON is a conference hosted by IBM's Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) in partnership with NSERC with the goal of showcasing various research projects in progress by individuals in academia, industry and the general public.
CASCON 2011 theme was "Intelligent, Interconnected, Instrumented" and most of the speaker sessions were on technologies to make a "smarter" planet. Personally, I liked the session by keynote speaker Dr. Eliot Siegel, M.D., from University of Maryland on educating Dr. Watson in medical domain to make use of Artificial Intelligence in medicine. That is because to educate Watson, a humungous amount of data gathered from general knowledge in medicine, sub-speciality knowledge, empirical knowledge and patient healthcare records, as well as available databases associated with clinical trials and other research studies needs to be mined by state-of-the-art NLP and Text Mining technologies -- which is in my particular interest.
This year's technology showcase areas were ranging from Business Process Management to Cloud Computing and Social technologies. Our Eclipse plug-in was showcased in the Software Development Platform and Tools category. Being the only showcase working in NLP and Software Engineering domain, our project attracted quite good attention of the visitor as well as other showcase presenters and I even had visitors who downloaded and installed the plug-in on their laptops on-site!
If you'd like to know more about our project, please refer to our publication on the Eclipse plug-in.
